The Beauty and the Feast — gardens you can eat

Gardening the desert way

Coachella Gardening is your helping hand for gardening in the low desert of the Coachella Valley.

Gardening here can be tough, especially if you are new to the area. Our seasons differ from the rest of the country. What would normally grow during the summer months is not the same here. When the rest of the country has dormant gardens during the winter, we have thriving ones.

Let me guide you through the rough terrain that is gardening in the desert. Learn how to grow your own food, get beautiful blooms and enjoy the uniqueness of our year-round gardening.

Now let's get growing!

Karen

I was born and raised in the Coachella Valley, and I've spent more than ten years gardening here with my own hands, in my own yard and in my family's. When I started, my backyard was gravel and cement. Today it holds fruit trees, raised vegetable beds, cattle-panel trellis tunnels, blackberries and blueberries, a rose garden, a culinary herb garden, and beds of seasonal and perennial flowers. All of it runs on efficient drip irrigation and a smart controller, and most months my water bill rates our use "efficient."

That garden taught me something many people here don't believe yet: you can have a thriving garden despite our summers. Plants need more than a trim and a timer, and knowing what each one needs is what carries it through July. Today I help homeowners with food gardens, containers, flowers, and getting gardens through the heat.

I'm a patient teacher, which is why I run workshops, and you'll leave with a written plan you can come back to. I'm also working toward my arborist certification. My goal is simple: that you walk away confident, inspired, and ready to grow something you love.

Different seasons

Our calendar is flipped

What grows in summer elsewhere isn’t what grows here. Timing is everything in the low desert.

Winter

Thriving, not dormant

While gardens across the country rest, ours are full of greens, peas, blooms and harvests.

Year-round

Something is always growing

With the right plan, a desert garden gives back in every season — food and flowers alike.
